Video, Movie & Film Club

Meetings during the Fall Semester will be at 4:00 p.m. in room C113 on the following Thursdays:

Purpose & Activities:

The club will explore the history of film beginning with the Kinetoscope and the contributions of Thomas Edison. Club members will view early silent films to include, “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station” (1896), “A Trip to the Moon” (1902), and “Nosferatu” (1922).

The club will explore different styles and genres as they view other notable films which will be selected based on societal and industry impact. For example, the 1988 Errol Morris documentary, “The Thin Blue Line,” pioneered the use of reconstruction which is now commonly used in true crime TV shows. Additionally, this documentary was responsible for the release of Randall Adams, the subject of the film who had been wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Club members will also see how film has historically been used as propaganda, as in “Triumph of the Will” (1935). Other classic, age appropriate films such as “Citizen Kane” (1941) will also be screened, as well as modern but impactful blockbusters including “Avatar” (2010) which redefined what moviegoers expected of CGI and 3-D graphics.

Club members will have the opportunity to view interviews with actors, directors, and other people integral to producing films. They will learn about how films are made from concept, creation and marketing, to the red carpet premier. Members will provide ratings and write reviews of films in an online club discussion board.

TMECHS Film Club members will create a short recruitment video for the campus which will be viewable on the campus website. Members will also have the opportunity to create an original film to enter in the EPISD Student Digital Film Festival which takes place at the end of the school year.

All TMECHS students will be eligible to join Film Club.
